Foreword

The Graduate School of Electronic Science and Technology (GSEST), Shizuoka University, offers three-year doctoral courses, consisting of the two majors, i.e., "Electronic Materials Science" and "Applied Electronic Technology". The GSEST was established in June 1976 to provide highly-qualified researchers and engineers in this field.

The distinctive feature of the research activities in the GSEST is based on the pioneering work of "television" on this campus by a former professor Kenjiro Takayanagi in around 1930. Reflecting this historical background, the professors in the GSEST (81 professors) are mostly dedicated to research subjects related to photonics and electronics, such as "imaging and sensing devices and their control circuits", "nanotechnology-based photonic and electronic devices", "materials science for photonics and electronics", "photo-communication and information technologies". Furthermore, as another prominent feature of the GSEST, we have two Visiting Chairs in the coordination with Hamamatsu University of Medicine in the interdisciplinary fields of "electronics and medicine".

Since the GSEST was established in 1976, about 370 students have received a doctor's degree and also we have continuously accepted many overseas students, reflecting our leading edge research activities in the field of photonics and electronics. After graduation with receiving the doctor's degree, the foreign students extensively work as scientific and engineering leaders in universities, companies, and a number of academic institutes in Asia, EU and other areas all over the world. At this moment, we have 81 professors and 51 students, including 12 foreign students from China, Thailand, Slovac, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries.

This booklet gives information to foreign students and I hope many foreign students to be interested in our graduate school. Students should not hesitate to ask us if they have any inquiries.
